Start With the Work the Building Must Support
A cost-effective steel building begins with an understanding of what will happen inside it. During TRIA Products’ October 26 steel division discussion, the team emphasized that owners should define their operations and preferred workflow before fixing the building dimensions. This gives the project team a better starting point for developing an efficient layout.
Why Clear Span Is Not Always the Most Economical Choice
Large clear-span steel buildings can be designed for applications that need uninterrupted floor space. However, eliminating interior columns is not automatically the lowest-cost solution. For a manufacturing facility, the team described how introducing columns in locations that do not interfere with equipment or circulation can substantially change the structural requirements and reduce building costs. The right choice depends on the facility’s operations and the space that must remain open.
Let Workflow Inform the Structural Layout
Before pricing a building, the owner and project team should understand production lines, equipment placement, storage, access routes, and required aisles. If a manufacturing operation can function with strategically located interior columns, that information can be considered during structural planning. If uninterrupted space is essential, the design must accommodate that requirement. The objective is not to add columns wherever possible; it is to avoid paying for structural features that the operation does not need.
Determine Dimensions After Space Requirements
The team offered a straightforward planning principle: determine what the business needs to do, then design the building around it. Selecting a standard footprint too early can create compromises when a slightly different width or length would better serve the operation. Site boundaries and other constraints may limit the available options, but where flexibility exists, the functional layout should inform the building envelope.
Make the Key Decisions Before Pricing
Early conversations among the owner, general contractor, building supplier, and design professionals can identify opportunities to refine the structure before pricing is finalized. Decisions about span, column placement, building dimensions, and operating requirements are closely connected. Resolving them early may reduce redesign and help produce a proposal that reflects how the building will actually be used.
Plan a Steel Building Around Your Operations
TRIA Products manufactures steel building components for commercial and industrial projects. Share your intended building use, operational layout, and site constraints with the project team early in the process so the structural concept can be evaluated against your needs.
