Why Custom Steel Building Design Matters

Not every construction project can be accommodated by a standard steel building configuration. Existing structures, specialized equipment, unusual building dimensions, and operational requirements can introduce design challenges. TRIA Products works with customers to evaluate structural options based on the requirements of individual projects.

Designing Around Existing Buildings

Expanding an existing building can introduce considerations that are less common in new construction. For example, an addition may need to accommodate different roof heights or align with an existing roof profile. Changes in roof elevation can also influence snow accumulation and structural loading. These conditions must be evaluated during engineering to ensure that the proposed addition does not introduce unacceptable loads to an existing structure.

Roof Geometry and Interior Clearance

Some buildings require additional interior clearance without increasing the overall height of the structure. Potential design considerations include:

  • Offset roof peaks: A roof configuration in which the highest point is not centered over the building.
  • Different eave heights: A building design incorporating different wall heights on opposing sides.
  • Modified truss configurations: Structural arrangements that may provide additional interior clearance where engineering and geometry permit.

The suitability of these approaches depends on project-specific engineering.

Integrating Steel Framing With Precast Concrete

Some building projects may benefit from combining steel framing with precast concrete wall systems. These projects require coordination between structural design, wall configuration, insulation, and roof connections. TRIA’s experience across steel and precast manufacturing creates opportunities to evaluate these systems together.

Evaluating the Right Solution

A custom building design should begin with the project’s functional requirements. The most appropriate structural solution may not be the one originally envisioned. By considering different framing and material configurations, customers can evaluate alternatives before committing to a final design.
